Rowan Newton

Rowan’s work is rich and engaging. He successfully mixes elements of comic design and graffiti with more traditional styles of painting.

Working in vivid colours with bold brush strokes his art often focuses on the strength of the female form and has voyeuristic undertones.

Rowan builds up multiple layers of acrylic and spray paint onto canvas. The acrylics are laid down first in a ‘thick line’ style then spray paint is dribbled, splattered and sprayed onto the piece. Finally he draws the image over the top using a paint pen - a style he first started experimenting with when he was studying for his B.A (Hons) in Illustration at Westminster University.

Clients, commissions and exhibitions

Rowan has worked on a variety of projects for clients such as Waitrose, Theatre of Wine, Tense Magazine and Fashion Monitor. He also has been commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre and has an enviable list of private clients.

Recently Rowan has exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair (London, Amsterdam, New York), Red Dot Art Fair (New York), Faces of the 21st Century (London) and Home Art Exhibition (London).

Inspiration and influences

Forever drawing cartoon and comic book characters as a child, Rowan knew from an early age that he wanted to draw for a living.  As he grew up his influences moved away from the X-Men towards street culture including graffiti and billboard advertisements. Today he is inspired by the likes of Jean-Michel Basquait, Will Barrass, Mr Jago, Jeff Soto, Stina Persson, Futura 2000 and Anthony Lister.
